WELCOME TO TASTE LIFE TWICE!
I start every session reading stunning pieces/literature aloud, while you sit back sipping tea, nibbling chocolates and letting the soothing experience of being read to sink in. There’s no expectation. The lilt and beauty of what I read, softly and naturally works in you, like osmosis.
After being filled with literature, we set pens to paper. I offer prompts from the readings and others are available too. You’re not expected to use them. I place them out just in case you wish to “play” with them. There’s no homework, all writing's done in the cozy atmosphere of my living room.
We pay attention to images that catch our eye, writing blurbs, blips, lists or pieces using visual details. What we notice, moments from our lives, naturally become art, sprout meaning. No need to be clever or impress, simply let the writing surprise you. Everything’s in place for your natural voice to flourish on paper here.
Scraping dried cheerios off the linoleum, say, flows into meaning, without you making it happen. Your grandmother's peaches in jars in the basement, your degree in anthropology stashed in the corner of your closet, that moment in childhood when you hid up in the maple... open like blossoms, into something surprising, almost as if by magic. Images flow into meaning. It happens, poof.
If I write, "My husband tossed the New York Times across his steaming eggs, butter soaking into the Arts and Leisure section, blew a kiss in the direction of the fridge and left with his cell phone stuck to his ear" you "get" it. I don't need to say that we're not communicating right now or how pissed I was that he ruined the paper and eggs! Visuals do all the work. We play with things like this. Once we get rolling, meaning effortlessly glides out our pen tips. You don't need to be clever, know things, “be a writer”. (I’ll keep repeating this!) Simply be willing to see where your pen goes.
I gently show you how to write visuals, sounds, scents etc. rather than rambles or philosophizing. You'll get it with ease. Your spirit will perk up, you may feel joy.
Choose a tea cup from the cupboard, sink into a chair, relish the flowers around the room, nibble chocolate, sink into the deliciousness of being read to, airlifted from the day to day and then... as quiet fills the room, POOF! Words river through. The scene's set, before you appear, creating a foundation for all of this to happen. And if nothing appears on your page, there's that box with writing starters and prompts to dip into for fun or a jump-start.
There's no homework or sweating over assignments. We write here. The ease is palpable. Everything written is a newborn, something to celebrate. The pieces tend to be tight and pleasing. A feeling of celebration circles the room. Hearing each new piece is a little thrill, like opening presents. I often see metaphors for life in what you write, surprising you, in a good way. Strong writing appears, without your having to “do” or “know” what you’re doing. I point it out so you may revel in it.
And take heart introverts, there's no conversation/crosstalk. You get to sink in and just be. I'll do the talking while you soak it all in or dream out the windows. The content of the pieces are never discussed - you may write that you just had sex with the entire volunteer fire department and I'll just respond to the actual writing! Freeing! Everyone else may wish I'd go into "and then what happened" but nope, I'll stick with what works on the page, not your life! The rest of the room remains quiet.
This is key, I respond with what works and only what works. This is how we learn best. When you see what shines, you build on that and organically deepen. What doesn't work falls naturally away. There's no self-consciousness or comparing or competing or judging. It's the perfect place to create.
The first time in the door might feel like hippos stomping your stomach. "I'm barely a writer or not a writer...what am I doing?" Or "I'm an introvert, what am I doing with these people!" And then you settle in and...you're home.
“This is better than Botox!” says one client. Faces often appear younger after the session. Your spirit lightens, you shift from stressed out and tired, to clear and lively. You return to your exquisite self, beautiful.
In response to signing up for the next session Beth wrote: "Duh, I'm coming back. You know you keep me off the streets, out of therapy, and away from (most) hard-core medications, excluding all alcoholic beverages… Love you! Love me in your eyes!"
I'd be delighted to tuck you in too. You'll find remarkable women here ages 30's through 90's. We're a compelling community who no longer feel alone and who laugh, sometimes shed tears together and feel the thrill and preservation of creating.
All you need is a journal, pen that glides and interesting socks. (We kick our shoes off inside the door.)
Welcome!
